Travel Sickness

Some people get travel sick every time they travel and others are only occasionally affected. Unfortunately even if you've never felt travel sick in your life it doesn't mean you never will - so make sure you can recognise the symptoms and know how to deal with them.

"Whether you're travelling by car, coach, boat or plane you can never be sure it will all be plain sailing."

Top tips to avoid that churning feeling

As well as feeling queasy, you may also suffer from sweating, dizziness, headaches and vomiting and it's your internal balancing system which is the core of the problem. It becomes confused by receiving conflicting messages - your eyes tell your brain that your body is still, but your balance organs know you're moving. The condition is made worse if you're reading or focussing on objects close to you. So, how do you avoid travel sickness?

1. Don't eat a huge meal before you travel or have a lot to drink.

2. When you're travelling by car or coach try to keep looking forwards and not out of a side window.

3. If you are often affected by travel sickness choose your position in the vehicle carefully. You should sit where it rolls the least - between the wings on a plane, in the middle of a boat.

4. If you start to feel ill, don't read or navigate and try to lie flat down with your eyes shut (difficult on a coach!)

5. You can buy elasticated wrist bands to help prevent travel sickness. They work by acupressure and are especially good for kids as they start to work immediately and have no side effects.

6. Children are generally more prone to travel sickness and it can be worse if blood sugar drops so keep a sweet handy while you're travelling.

7. Ginger is widely believed to reduce or relieve the symptoms of travel sickness as it warms and settles the digestion. Carry some crystallized ginger with you to chew or make a drink with 0.5g of fresh root ginger (or half a teaspoon of dried powdered ginger) to one cup of water. Infuse for 5 minutes and sip while hot.

8. There are several brands of travel sickness tablets available but they may cause side effects such as drowsiness and a dry mouth. If one brand doesn't work for you or makes you tired, try another next time. Ask your pharmacist for advice if you need it.
