Margate, Hastings and Eastbourne once evoked the kind of slightly sad seaside hols only those without the wherewithal to hit the Costas would dream of taking.
But all that’s changing now credit-crunched Brits are staying home in droves and exploring what homegrown resorts have to offer 21st century visitors.

That doesn’t mean what it did 50 years ago, when the glory days of these resorts depended on funfairs, bandstands and plenty of places to buy toffee-apples, “Kiss Me Quick” hats and saucy postcards.
