Seen as one of Britain's wonders, Durham Cathedral is probably one of the last of the large cathedrals to allow its visitors free entry, although donations do keep it open.
With a tower you can climb, great gothic windows, a monastery and a citadel wall, the River Wear winds past this magnificent piece of architecture. Relax afterwards in the Cathedral restaurant.
