The Future for Cuba

Can Cuba maintain its unique personality as countries all around it change with the times? We discuss the issue here.

Cuba; a warm Caribbean climate fills the air, classical cars cruise the streets, and music and dance infuse the air. Colourful, vibrant and diverse is Cuba, a country with a personality unlike any other on earth.

And it is this personality that is loved by many, but just how long will it last? How long until it becomes another country filled with coffee shops and fast food joints?

Question:

  •  Why hasn't Cuba already got such establishments? It seems most countries nowadays do!

Answer: Thanks to a US trade embargo against Cuba, is a prohibition that restricts the US from carrying out business with Cuba, be it economic, financial or commercial.

Washington have vowed to keep the ban in place until the Cuban government will release political prisoners, grant basic freedoms and schedule elections that can be internationally monitored.

Question:

  •    So, what makes us think this might change?

Answer: A new poll from Florida International University (FIU) has shown that 55% of Cuban-Americans in Florida agree with a lift of this ban. This shows a significant change in attitudes from a 1991 poll in which the majority of Cuban-Americans opposed this trade ban.

Question:

  •  But these opinions don't mean that the lift of this ban will go ahead do they?

Answer: Well, no. But the FIU belives these results to be important, saying that they highlight a change in attitudes within the 650,000 Cuban-Americans living in Miami. Those who were exiled to the USA in the 1960's were far more opposed to a lift in this ban than those who arrived in the 1980's.

Question:

  •  Surely the US government need to be involved for such changes to happen?

Answer: Yes, exactly right. And although he hasn't stated that the ban will be lifted, Yahoo News has stated that US President-elect, Barack Obama 'would end the restrictions on travel to Cuba by Cuban-Americans imposed by President George W. Bush to toughen the embargo in 2004'.

Yahoo News do however also state that Obama has 'stopped short of saying he supports lifting the embargo against Cuba'.

                                                                    ---------------------------------------------

Since the govenrmental take over from Fidel Castro to brother, Raul Castro, Obama is reported to support talks with the country regarding such issues.

So, although no decisions have been made - the world will waiting in aniticipation to see what happens.
