Valentine's Day has waxed and waned but Brazil has not forgotten the passion. The world's most famous pageant, the Rio Carnival is happening right now. It is the last chance before Easter to indulge in all types of excess before the abstinence of Lent begins.
Colourful floats, sexy samba dancers and cross-dressers engulf the streets of Rio de Janeiro. The 5 day festival starts on Friday, February 20th. If Brazil is too far-flung, there is more fun closer to home.

It is high summer in February in Rio and it is party central. It kicks off with the crowning of the Fat King of Carnivals (King Momo) - the Bacchus of Latin America.
He is presented with a giant silver and gold key and this is the switch that flicks the party light on.
The mood is electric. Pulsing music swells over the mesmerized party-goers as gold-splashed semi-naked samba dancers gyrate through the crowds. It is even possible to take part.
