With the tempting smell of spicy mulled wine filling the air, the warmth of the delicious hot food being cooked, and the buzz of cheerful festive music surrounding you - the atmosphere of Salzburg is hard to beat at this time of year.

Salzburg's historic city centre has been transformed into a winter wonderland when both Cathedral and Residence Squares become home to street musicians, festive market stalls and snow dusted Christmas trees.

Browse the tasty food stalls for some local specialities and get your hands on some last minute Christmas presents that you wouldn’t be able to get at home.

Look out for Austrian toys, handmade tree decorations and yummy gingerbreads! And there are also other markets dotted around the city to explore.

Cosy up to your loved one, take a romantic evening stroll, or wrap up warm and enjoy some hot roasted almonds and gingerbread with your friends. With the choirs singing, sleigh rides, nativity scenes and music playing it’s hard not to get in the festive mood this winter in Salzburg.

Salzburg's Top Attractions

Salzburg Cathedral, by night

Salzburg Cathedral

Possibly the most recognisable landmark in Salzburg is the stunning Cathedral which dominates the landscape. As the location for some of the Christmas markets, this attraction will certainly be very hard to miss. The cathedral as you see it today is a result of a rebuild following a fire, and the end result is something much larger and more impressive than the original building. It's definitely worth a visit and as you can see in this picture it is enchanting by night.

Known for its stunning Baroque decoration, St. Peter's Abbey is another of Salzburg's 'must see' sights. As well as the impressive interior and exterior of the building, it's also home to an impressive collection of artwork .And if all that exploring makes you hungry you can enjoy a bite to eat in the legendary Weinkeller Restaurant which you will find adjacent to the church. Sounds like a good plan to us!
