Discovering Cambodia

Lisa Francesca Nand packs her bags for Cambodia and discovers a breathtaking country only recently re-discovered on the tourist trail.

When I heard Cambodia might be touted as one of "the places to go" this year I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed. I'd been planning to go for ages and, if I'm honest, was worried this new endorsement might open the flood gates.

Luckily, this was far from the case and a bit of research revealed surprisingly little about the country as a holiday destination as opposed to a brief stop on the back-pack trail.

What I did find was the perfect combination of cultured colonial cities, gorgeous food and long palm fringed beaches with sand so white it squeaks. And, having virtually jettisoned its own currency in favour of the struggling US dollar, it's possible to stay in the standard of hotels you wouldn't usually dream of splashing out on.

Siem Reap and the temples at nearby Angkor is a great place to start.

It sounds clichéd but Angkor Wat really does take your breath away. It's a veritable warren of ancient architectural genius, oozing with atmosphere, particularly if you get there for sunrise before the hordes arrive.

The ramshackle Ta Prohm temple, gradually being absorbed by jungle, and shown off by a PVC clad 'Angelina Jolie' from Tomb Raider, is truly awe-inspiring.

In Siem Reap itself there are plenty of good restaurants, markets and the ubiquitous foot massage outlets to entertain and the novelty of riding tuk tuk's everywhere doesn't wear off easily.
