Crisp air and blue skies, trees splashed with brown and orange, and the hiss of skates whizzing over ice... Add an eclectic array of designer bargains and window displays in this vibrant, neon-lit city will draw you in, whether you’re armed with a lengthy wish-list of Christmas shopping or a taste for a long weekend of sightseeing and dining.
New York adores its window displays and they certainly get everyone in the festive mood – but don’t think it’s just about Christmas. First off is Hallowe’en (31 Oct), taken ever so seriously with ornately-carved pumpkins, electronic displays and animated witches giving a comically ghoulish edge.
Stores like Dean and Deluca fill with edible goodies for Thanksgiving (26 Nov), the nation’s most significant holiday, and everyone looks forward to the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, going strong since 1924. Join in the festivities and take in the colourful floats and costumes between 61st and 72nd Streets, west of Central Park West. Or you can ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ as thousands of balloons are inflated on the previous day, between 77th and 81st Streets, 3-10pm.
