Londoners worried about the long term legacy of the 2012 Olympics need only look to Athens to see what lots of international attention - plus about £26 billion worth of new infrastructure can achieve.
Since it hosted the 2004 Olympics, Athens has been transformed.
It's a confident, sophisticated, modern European city these days with a great new Metro and several pleasant pedestrian districts connecting all the top sites.

Athens is packed with excellent museums. The show stopper, the New Acropolis Museum, is set to open in November.
But don't overlook the golden treasures of Mycenae, including the mask of Agamemnon, at the National Archaeological Museum.

The Ancient Agora, the commercial centre of Athens for 1,200 years, is a cool, shady park, overlooked by the lovely Temple of Hephaestus and the restored Stoa of Attalos, now a museum devoted to the first democracy.
