Travelling with young children? Some airlines charge excess baggage fees for infant's essential items. Find out more here.
Airline passengers travelling with young children are being unfairly penalised when it comes to baggage allowance, according to independent travel retailer The Co-operative Travel.
Of the top seven airlines used by British holidaymakers only two, British Airways and Virgin, provide a baggage allowance for infants.
Take into consideration that the average family needs an extra 14-15 kg of essential items for each travelling infant, and this seems highly unfair.
Co-operative Travel found Ryan Air to be worst for families as they allow only a maximum of 15kg per passenger, with no additional allowance for infants. The cost for Ryan Air passengers, including parents who need to take essential items for their children, is £12 per kg.
Both Virgin and British Airways boast a 23kg baggage allowance plus an infant allowance - however it is these companies who charge the highest excess luggage fees of £35 - £90 for overseas flights.
Trevor Davis, Head of Retail Distribution with The Co-operative Travel, said: “The situation can be confusing and we believe it’s important that families know what charges they might incur before they book.
Parents with young children are advised to find out about their airline's baggage policies before travelling, as there may be ways to save money by booking bags in online or mentioning additional bags on booking.
