If you love to travel but hate the hassle of the airport, then British Airways' brand new service flagship to New York could be right up your street. Whilst predominantly designed for business travellers, I went to see what is on offer for the leisure passenger on what as been dubbed the "Son of Concorde."
These flights leave from London City Airport, which due to its compact nature is a delight to use and means that you can check-in for the flight up to just 15 minutes before departure - unheard of on other transatlantic flights.
They make this possible by a very well engineered process to speed you from the airport door to the aircraft door - from kerbside check-in through a separate security channel to the bespoke gate lounge, just for this service. When you consider that all this is for a maximum of 32 passengers on each flight, you are aware of the very special attention you are receiving.
Normally the visit to the lounge would be a fleeting one, but on the day I travelled, there was a technical delay. However, there was free wifi in the lounge which most of my fellow passengers made use of, along with a selection of drinks including Avaya Champagne.
The lounge has floor to ceiling windows looking out at the aircraft, reminiscent of the old Concorde room at Heathrow. However, the aircraft I'm looking at is rather less pointy - it's a brand new Airbus A318, currently the largest aircraft able to fly into London City, but still much smaller than the widebody planes normally used on transatlantic flights.
