Simon explores Obidos to discover if it is, like some say, the most beautiful town in all of Portugal.
By Simon Calder
Portugal is the strangely overlooked collection of wonders in south-west Europe ... while plenty of us know the Algarve, much of the rest of the country is unknown to many British holidaymakers. This year, particularly because prices are so competitive in both travelling to Portugal and spending when you are there, I am doing my best to explore as much as possible. Certainly the jewel in the crown of lovely towns of inland Portugal is Obidos - a medieval village that lives up to the old travel cliche of "lost in time". You can wander around the walls, explore the cobbled streets, visit tranquil churches and sip coffee in age-old cafes. Best of all, stay in the pousada - historic hotel - so you can enjoy Obidos after the day-trip crowds go home. And all within an hour's drive of Lisbon airport.
