Simon has been on the road again and this week he has some great reasons why you should head to local food markets while you are on holiday. Watch his new video now.
Wherever your Mediterranean holiday takes you, there are some near-certainties; the sun will shine, the sea will sparkle - and there will be a fascinating local market nearby.
Anywhere in Europe - or the wider world - a market provides a fascinating cross section of local life.
What do the people in your host community cultivate, fish and rear?
The gastronomic answers are served up on a plate, or at least in a succession of market stalls. Strange creatures from the deep, interesting cuts of meat and - more photogenically - mountains of just-picked fruit and veg are all on display.
The produce you see first thing in the morning - which, by the way, is definitely the time to be there - is likely to be on your restaurant's menu by lunchtime.
Or, if you are self-catering, you can stock up on ingredients fresher than any supermarket can hope to offer. As a tourist you are likely to be (a) tolerated, and (b) largely ignored.
But the appropriate compensation for what could be hours of entertainment is, of course, to spend at least a few euros on the ingredients for an excellent picnic.
