Simon Calder talks cheap tickets, destinations and dispels myths about travelling by the Eurostar.
By Simon Calder
For anyone who loves travelling to Paris or Brussels, it seems as though the train link from London has been around forever. In fact, Eurostar has been operating for 15 years, shuttling between the capital cities in under three hours.
Now, travellers have the opportunity to depart from arguably the most beautiful station in Europe, St Pancras International – a setting that puts the romance back in rail travel.
Thanks to the new high-speed line from here, the time to Brussels is below two hours, and only two hours 15 minutes will take you to Paris – and the magnificent Gare du Nord. Fares, too, have fallen over the years; they started as a minimum of £95 return, but now deals of £59 are available if you plan in advance and avoid peak times such as Friday night, Sunday night and Monday morning.
And there’s no reason why your journey should end with Eurostar; at Paris, Brussels or Lille, you can plug into the trans-European network of express trains to Italy, Germany or Holland.
