Portugal is rightly one of our most popular countries, from the rich cuisine, culture and architecture of Lisbon to the beaches and golf courses of the Algarve.
Yet there are vast areas of Europe's westernmost country that British travellers overlook. I'm just back from a trip to the area north and west of the capital. Not only is the coast spectacular, but it is dotted with some fascinating places.
One of these is Peniche, an ancient port with a striking fortress, a great surfing beach, lovely restaurants - and the Café Actual, where you can actually get a feast for under a fiver.
Best of all, the Lace School provides startling evidence that you need as much training and skill to make a doyly as you do to fly a Boeing 747 or conduct brain surgery. And from Peniche it's an easy half-hour trip inland to the town of Obidos - but that's another film, for another day.
