specialised activities - and embark on the trip of a lifetime:
It's high, dry and breathtakingly beautiful, but Chile's Atacama Desert is even more famous for its night sky than its dunes, geysers, salt flats and two-mile-high lagoon. That's why a $1bn telescope is being built there, but you don't have to wait till 2011 to enjoy the show. Stay in the chilled village of San Pedro de Atacama and take night tours with an astronomer who lets you gaze at the planets through his own giant telescopes. September or December are the best months.
