The country has been undergoing a stage of recovery in recent years.  It has overcome 2004's tsunami, as well as bombings in the capital and political insurgency as recently as 2006.  These though have not dampened its appeal as an awe-inspiring and surprising destination.  It is best enjoyed between November and March before the local extremes of weather begin, although they also tend to be the most crowded months.
