Accommodation in Kuala Lumpur ranges from the budget end of the market to some very swanky 5 star hotels.
The city's landscape is dominated by the Petronas Towers which were completed in 1996. You can visit the walkway in the middle here for views out onto the city, and an audio visual display describing the building of this monument. The towers house many offices, and also an impressive shopping centre with 4 floors of designer, and also ‘high street' goods.
Other good places to shop are China Town and Little India, where you can buy cheap watches, sunglasses, trainers, jeans, bags; you name it they've got it! Prepare to haggle here and you should pick up some great bargains. Central Market is close to China Town and this is a good spot for Asian home wares including throws, ornaments, candles, pictures and cushion covers.
Head out of the city centre for some sight seeing. The Batu Caves are nearby. This is a Hindu Temple, and the sight of a huge festival attended by thousands of Malaysian Hindu's every year. There are 272 steps to climb to reach the large cave, and Hindu icons are everywhere to be seen, as well as monkeys which pose for photos in between stealing food from the bins!
The Royal Palace is another place to stop for a photo or two. Here you'll see horseback guards rather like those in London! Time it right and you'll witness the changing of the guards, with new guards being inspected by their superiors.
The war memorial is a tranquil monument to the 1st and 2nd world wars, and the ‘Emergency' was of the 1960s. Many British soldiers are commemorated here, and the focal point is one of the world's largest free standing monuments.
The range of food available in Kuala Lumpur rivals any city. Chinese, Indian, Thai and Malay cuisine are all popular, and Malaysian chefs are some of the best in the world. Ingredients are fresh, flavours intense, and best of all prices are usually low!
Kuala Lumpur's nightlife can be very exciting. There are a number of bars and restaurants, and often the most fashionable are located within hotels. Sky Bar in Traders Hotel has amazing views of the Petronas Towers at night, plus a cocktail list that'll tempt any ‘girl about town'. Bangsar is another hotspot for bar hopping tourists and locals.
