The Cameron Highlands were discovered and named after British Surveyor William Cameron in 1885, and their fame grew in the colonial era. There's a much cooler climate here, which is a refreshing respite from a muggier atmosphere in Kuala Lumpur itself. The mountain slopes were found to be very fertile, and the area is home to many tea plantations and strawberry and vegetable farms. That colonial popularity is still very evident today. Much of the architecture seems straight out of Tudor England, with quaint country cottages complete with beamed walls and ceilings, and flower gardens.
Jungle walks are a popular pastime here, and many come to spend a week or so trekking the many trails. It's pretty difficult to see many animals, but the plant life is fascinating, with many orchid varieties and also rhododendrons, ginger, ferns and roses.
Golf is also popular, and with the crisp clean air it can feel like golfing in the Scottish Highlands! The Cameron Highlands Resort has an 18 hole golf course where you can finish your day with a Scottish malt whiskey in the bar!
The tea plantations in the area are very much in evidence as you drive around. You can visit one of these and tour the factory as well, to find out all about the processing of this prized commodity.
Another interesting activity here is a visit to the Orang-Asli, the indigenous Malaysian people who live in the area. To most westerners this offers an insight to a tribal village and their ways of life, including learning how to use a blow dart, and hearing about how they live.
In keeping with the regions laid back and peaceful atmosphere, spa treatments are also available here at the Cameron Highlands Resort Spa Village. The signature treatment is a tea based bath which precedes every massage, wrap, facial or scrub!
