Grand Canyon
At a tremendous 277 miles long and roughly 10 miles wide, the Grand Canyon is an incredible natural wonder, once described by Theodore Roosevelt as ‘absolutely unparalleled throughout the rest of the world'. Formed over 6 million years by the sheer force of the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon is so spectacular that a visit to Las Vegas really should include a visit here. Head to the ‘Grandview Point', a towering 2250 metres from ground level, for a stunning view over the canyon - see how the rocks appear to change colour from white in the daytime to a redish colour at sunset. Mule rides are a good way to travel the narrower trails, a day hike is offered for hikers, or for the more adventurous - an overnight trip is possible.
The Grand Canyon is 180 miles from Las Vegas, however the drive is about 280 miles. Driving will take 5/6 hours, coach trips are available, as are helicopter or aeroplane flights which will take 1 to 3 and a half hours, some just flying over the canyon and others landing in its centre.
