Since 1985, the Silverstone circuit has been the hub of English motorcar racing. The sport was immortalised by that notorious loveable rogue; Mr Toad, Esq. of Toad Hall in Wind in the Willows when he stole an 'automobile'. Who can blame him for succumbing to temptation as it has always been the English sportsman's first love?
Motor cars and superbikes are now the only things that explode around what used to be a Royal Air Force World War II bomber base but it's in its 11th hour. This year the big weekend is held on the 19th - 21st June but in 2010, the Grand Prix hosting rights baton will be handed to Donnington. There are none more nostalgic than its drivers:
"Formula One just wouldn't be the same without Silverstone - it's become a British phenomenon", Lewis Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes-Mercedes).
The good news is Siverstone is only an hour out of London so feel the heat and smell of burning rubber for yourself. There is no need to worry as the circuit will definitely be alive and kicking with other events and will be one of the main attractions in the area. Watch this space.
