Tenerife's south coast is home to the island's best beaches. Visitors can lie back on the sand and relax, or take advantage of the watersports and excellent diving. The good winds make windsurfing a particular favourite, and El Médano beach is a popular haunt for windsurfers, whatever your level.
Due to its volcanic origin, the sand on Tenerife's beaches is ash coloured, but the resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas have overcome this problem by importing light-coloured sand from the Sahara. If you prefer to enjoy the island's natural beauty, however, then Playa de la Tejita is an ideal choice where the natural red sand makes it one of Tenerife's most attractive beaches.
Like the beaches, the best of Tenerife's nightlife is also on the south of the island. The main resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas are home to the most popular clubs.
The rest of the island's nightlife is more low-key. Costa Adeje, for example, is quieter with a limited selection of bars and restaurants. Other smaller resorts have much of the available entertainment centred around their hotels.
With a clear divide in the type of resort on offer, visitors can chose whether they want to live it up, or relax.
Tenerife is home to a variety of culinary traditions. Potaje (a thick soup) originated in the Canary Islands, and Carne con Patatas (stew and potatoes) and Queso a la Plancha (grilled cheese and coriander) are just some of the other specialities you should try. Fish, like on all of Spain's islands, is also a good choice, as is the Spanish tradition of Tapas. As for drink, if you fancy trying some of Tenerife's traditional wine, sample 'Malvasia' along with the island's delicious cuisine.
Whether you want to buy some souvenirs, or just soak up a bit of the local atmosphere, then a visit to one of Tenerife's markets is a must. Los Cristianos hosts a weekly market every Sunday where fresh produce and souvenirs are on offer. Playa de las Americas has a number of shopping centres with high street stores, and Costa Adeje is the place to go for boutiques. Puerto de la Cruz is the best choice for local crafts; leather, lace and pottery are just a few of the things for sale at very reasonable prices.
