Palacio Real
Madrid's Royal Palace ‘Palacio Real', is a definite ‘must see' of the city and is possibly the most stunning building in the city. Today it's used by the King for state occasions, but tourists can look around this magnificent 18th century building most days. Some of the highlights are the impressive dining room with its stunning ceiling paintings and the elaborate throne room, with many more to explore, a landmark not to be missed.

Puerta del sol
Puerta del sol, or ‘Gateway of the sun' is one of Madrid's liveliest areas. This bustling square is a great meeting place for all ages, with plenty to see and do here. It's here that you'll find the point where all of Madrid's roads are measured from ‘, Kilometer Zero', the impressive statue of Carlos II in the centre of the square and Casa de Correos, which was once the city's post office, all add to the stunning ambiance of this vibrant place. When night time falls, this is when the area really comes alive, with locals and tourists looking for a lively night out in the many restaurants and bars.

Plaza Mayor
Just a short stroll for Puerta del sol you'll find Madrid's main square Plaza Mayor. Surrounded by stunning architecture, you can sit and watch the world go by in one of the many bustling cafés that line the square. Enjoy a leisurely lunch, or dine alfresco in the evening for a truly Spanish treat. It's quite expensive to eat here, so you can always bring your own food and have a picnic in the square. This beautiful 17th century square, is traffic free, full of life, and character.

The San Isidro festival
The San Isidro festival takes place every May. Considered to be the ultimate bullfighting festival, San Isidro attracts all the top bullfighters and bull breeders. This event is extremely popular and it's worth getting tickets in advance as every night of the festival is a sell out. If you're visiting Madrid at a different time of year, you'll still be able to experience a bullfight during the season which runs from March to October. Prepare yourself for some guts and gore, but a great way to get to grips with this ancient Spanish tradition.

Parque del Retiro
One of Madrid's most famous and largest parks, ‘Parque del Retiro' is the perfect retreat from the bustling city life. Take a stroll, enjoy a leisurely picnic or hire a boat, or roll up your trousers and go for a paddle in the huge lake in the centre of the park. Enjoy a relaxing meal or drink in one of the several outdoor cafés around the park and soak up the relaxed atmosphere of these beautiful surroundings.

Almudena Cathedral
Located opposite the Palacio Real is the impressive ‘Santa María la Real de La Almudena' (Almudena Cathedral). Built in a Neo-Gothic style, this cathedral has a Romanesque crypt to explore. The interior of the building is also in a Neo- Gothic style which has modern statues and chapels, making this an extremely unique and interesting place to visit.

Paseo del Prado
Head to Paseo del Prado for an impressive collection of Madrid's museums and art galleries. Most famous are the Museo del Prado and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza which are both home to incredible collections of world famous paintings. As well as the museums there are also stunning monuments in this area. Visit the Plaza de Cibeles, a fountain with the statue of the Roman Goddess Cybele and the former gateway into Madrid, the Puerta de Alcalá. An area of the city you must visit for a feeling of some of the country's history and culture.

Reina Sofia Museum
This impressive museum, once a 18th century former general hospital, takes you on a journey through 20th century works of art, including pieces by Salvador Dalí and Eduardo Chillida. But the highlight of this museum without a doubt has to be Picasso's Guernica. A chance to view some world famous pieces of art all under one roof.
