There has been a strong history of motor car racing in Spain and the first ever Grand Prix used car touring rules instead of Grand Prix rules as they shot around the 300-kilometre road circuit near Madrid. Marked by tragic accidents in the 50s and later in the 70s the new Circuit de Catalunya to the north of Barcelona has strict safety rules and has been championed as the Grand Prix of the Olympic Games. From the 8th - 10th May 2009 the Formula 1 Grand Prix race will have hordes of fans holding their breath as drivers compete for 1st prize.
