For the best beaches on the Costa Dorada, Salou is the place to go. It has eight excellent beaches all within a short distance of each other. Platja de Llevant and Platja de Ponent are the best and both also offer watersports. L'Ampolla beach has a good range of facilities to compliment its Blue Flag status. It's nestled in between some rocky outcrops and has pedaloes for hire. Finally, Torredembarra beach in Tarragona is a nice spot to soak up the sunshine. It has sand dunes and vegetation that reach right down to the beach and peaceful waters ideal for children.
Nightlife on the Costa Dorada is a low-key affair with most people choosing to enjoy the peaceful evenings walking through the towns, or along the seafront promenades.
Evenings spent lingering over delicious Spanish specialities in quaint restaurants is another popular way to enjoy the coast. Spaniards love spending time over their food and it makes a refreshing change not to be rushed through the courses, but instead being left to take the evening at your own pace.
If you feel inclined to partake in a bit of dancing then Salou can get quite lively at night with its selection of pubs, bars, discos and clubs.
Coming to the Costa Dorada? Then you must try fresh fish with arroz negreo - rice that has been cooked in squid with its ink to give it a black appearance. Other ingredients include peppers, peas, garlic, onion and tomato.
Escalivada is also a good local nibble made from peppers, tomato and aubergine and onion all roasted in olive oil.
As for shopping, the bigger cities have a more extensive choice. For sheer variety Barcelona is hard to beat. Here you'll find everything from designer boutiques to high street stalls and flea markets. Tarragona also offers a good selection of shops and its pedestrianized precinct makes browsing stress free, with no need to worry about dodging the traffic.
All towns in the Costa Dorada have their own weekly markets where you can pick up fresh produce as well as clothes, shoes and souvenirs.
