Discovered in 1959 the cuevas de Nerja are an educational experience as well as an entertaining one. Lights illuminate the chambers to reveal the caves delights including the tallest central column in a cave in the world.

Parque Zoologico
Children will love the chance to get up close to the animals which have been taken into this zoo to be cared for following injuries. There are many endangered species and indigenous animals including an iderian lynx and red pandas.

Nature Reserves
This area of coastland in the Almería Province was classed as a Biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1997. It includes areas of untouched coastal beauty such as coves, beaches and rocky outcrops. Also a great place to do some scuba-diving.

Markets
Fuengirola is the setting for largest market in Costa del Sol but all towns have at least one weekly market where you can find a good selection of local produce and souvenirs. Ask at your local tourist office for details.

Semana Santa
Although Semana Santa is celebrated all over Spain it's in the south where the occasion is felt more passionately than elsewhere. Groups of men from the local community (known as brotherhoods) parade large floats depicting biblical scenes through the town in the week leading up to Easter Sunday. You don't have to be religious to appreciate this spectacle and the occasion is definitely worth a look should you be near one of the main Andalucian city's at this time of year.

Feria de Abril
A colourful party held each spring in its own purpose built area where you can dance flamenco until dawn, take a ride in a traditional horse and carriage, hear Spanish guitars and song and eat some great Spanish food. There's also a huge fair and opening ceremony where you can see all the lights being switched on. There are thousands of bulbs which light the area and the illumination is quite a sight.
