Mount Ainos
The tallest mountain in Kefalonia, the majority of Mount Ainos is a National Park. Wild horses run and pine forests grow on its slopes. On a clear day, the blue Mediterranean sea is visible, sparkling between the Ionian islands Zante, Lefkada and Ithaca, and the mainland Peloponnesian peninsula. A path leads up to the mountain peak, although it does become increasingly challenging as you ascend.

Feast of the Virgin Mary/Snake Festival
The two rather incongruous-sounding names for this festival are accounted for by the fact that, in celebration of the Virgin Mary's feast day, Kefalonians from Markopoulo place harmless snakes around the monastery of the Virgin Mary. Legend has it that the nuns who used to worship here prayed to Mary to be transformed into snakes so that they could escape from pirates. Alongside this traditional observance, dances, music and food are also enjoyed.

The Old Skala Ruins
The Old Skala ruins are what is left of Skala 's previous incarnation, before it was destroyed by an earthquake. After the earthquake hit, Skala was relocated to the coast. A trip up to the Old Skala ruins is quite a walk, and the ruins themselves are not overly impressive, but the views over Skala and the feeling of days gone by are well worthwhile.

Cinema Nightclub
The biggest nightclub in Kefalonia, Cinema Club was formerly a cinema, as the name suggests, and as such many of the original features remain. Theatre-style chairs cluster around a bar, while an antique projector sits in the corner. A state-of-the-art sound system pumps out music to a packed dance floor, flashing lights illuminate the club, and tropical palm trees line the central bar.
