Paris offers a wide range of places to eat and drink, with the opportunity to sample the very best of French cuisine as well as food from around the world.
For a taste of authentic Parisian gastronomy then brasseries are a great way to eat. Here you can get a wide choice of traditional dishes at reasonable prices in a unique and original environment. Typical dishes you could expect to sample include lamb cassoulet, turbot with beurre blanc, duck with olives, sea bass, scallops and roast chicken. For desert expect mouth watering patisseries as well as sorbet, ice cream and fruit.
Vegetarians may have some problems in finding meat-free options but the wave of change is rolling with more chefs offering delicious vegetarian menus. In the mean time chèvre chaud (goat's cheese salad), omelettes and vegetable risotto are typical dishes you can expect to find.
Restaurants are also numerous if you're looking for something more formal. You can find many good French options serving up dishes from all over the country. The confit du canard from the Dordogne region is a tasty and popular choice.
Café's are another popular way to eat if you're just looking for a snack. Relax on sofas amid the relaxed surroundings with a coffee, patisserie and some good company. Cafés are a good choice for breakfast where you can get coffee, croissants, hot chocolate and herbal tees.
Shopping, like eating in Paris is a varied affair. You can choose luxurious and chic in the designer stores along the Champs Élysées, cheap and cheerful in the numerous Parisian markets throughout the city or somewhere in-between with the great selection of High Street Stores. To peruse a large number of items under one roof then department stores are a good way to go. Les Galleries Lafayette and Printemps are two such stores, with the temptation to part with your cash at every turn.
For entertainment the Moulin Rouge is an iconic place to catch some theatre and dance as well as good food and drink. The Paris Opéra Garnier is another stop if you fancy a night of music and song or dance as it's home to both the Paris Opera and the Paris Opera ballet. The Opéra Garnier is also located in an area teaming with department stores (such as Printemps and Galeries Lafayette) perfect if you're looking for something special to wear for a night at the opera.
For clubs and pubs then Paris has a good selection ranging from hip and trendy to laid back and studenty. For a slice of clubbing chic then Les Bains on Rue Bourg L'Abbé is a good way to start. Here beautiful people dance to tunes promoted by David and Cathy Guetta. Le Cab, La Hammam and Le VIP are three more places to go for glamour while more mainstream venues include La Scala and Club Med World.
Rue Oberkampf is a good place to go for bars, especially if you want to visit a few in one night, as the street boasts a good selection with table and chairs decorating the street outside.
For the latest club nights, happy hours and promotions then look out for flyers, websites and local radio shows which often give information on events and good nights out.
