Traditional food in Croatia is simple and unfussy, with the emphasis on fresh ingredients and seafood.
Foreign influences have evidently reached Croatian shores, with a range of international dishes on offer from Italian and Hungarian to Turkish and Viennese. However, if you want to sample the local delights then look out for fresh fish and pork roasted on a spit, which are popular local delicacies.
Other delights include black risotto (coloured by squid ink), red wine-infused pork chops and a local stew called peka which is a combination of meats, vegetables and herbs mixed together then stewed in a traditional Croatian clay pot. Scampi is also a delicious choice, cooked in a tomato, herb and onion sauce.
Overall, you can't go wrong if you are a seafood fan with a variety of tasty options available. The pièce de résistance is brodetto all'istiana, a fish stew crammed full with shrimps, crabs, succulent mussels and clams.
Coffee is a popular choice for an after-dinner beverage and tends to come strong and black.
For a chance to indulge in some retail therapy, head to the Dubrovnik Rivera's lively street markets where you can pick up a range of souvenirs and local items. Things to keep your eyes open for include jewellery, lace - including the 'La Croat' neck tie - paintings and home made lavender oils.
The resorts all provide a selection of shops to purchase everyday goods and souvenirs, and Dubrovnik offers the greatest choice of high street products.
The Dubrovnik Riviera is a mix of quiet bays and picturesque coves decorated with clusters of rocks jutting out onto the sand. It's easy to find a patch of sand on which to while away an hour or two whilst relaxing under the sunshine.
The coastline is clean and clear, resulting in perfect conditions for snorkelling, and gentle winds make windsurfing and sailing a pleasure. Swimming is also a great way to cool down and enjoy the water, and lots of hotels boast their own bathing platforms from which you can easily slide into the sea.
For the liveliest nightlife on the Dubrovnik Riviera you have to head for Dubrovnik itself, where you can find a good selection of bars and cafes. Here you can enjoy a drink and make new friends before heading off to one of the city's discos.
Restaurants are also plentiful in Dubrovnik: you can enjoy a meal and a glass of something chilled while sat on one of the many outdoor terraces.
Elsewhere along the coast you can pass your evenings walking through pretty villages or along coastal paths, whether you're walking off a good meal or just relaxing under the stars.
