Very nice hotel, polite staff and beautiful restaurant and pool area.
    • October 8,2009: 5
Returned home yesterday from my yearly 2 September/October weeks at this hotel. Sol Azur has become my Tunisian home after having stayed there for many years. Yes, the hotel itself could do with a "touch-up" being a bit dated but the friendly staff and super location more than makes up for the somewhat dated chairs and tables. I arrived the day of the big storm when roads were flodded and many lives lost in the south of Tunisia. How the gardeners managed to keep the gardens spotless even after such a storm I'll never understand. Thankfully, most of the Russian "guests" had already left so there were less struggle and "fighting" at both breakfast and dinner. Much could be said about their behaviour both towards staff and guests...

This hotel is part of a 3-hotel group (Bel Azur, Sol Azur, Royal Azur) sharing a huge garden/park and a 2-segment beach. The park itself is great and worth some night walks, it is illuminated beautifully. Also in the park there are some buffets, bars, etc. The hotel beach is great, because it has not only parasols, but also some areas with long rows of sunroof made of straw. So you can move your sunbed in the sun or in the shadow at ease, irrespective on the sun's position. This is much easier than if there were only parasols. There were barely enough sunbeds in September, I don't know if they bring more during the high season. The sea did have some algae in it but the good news is that it is a kind of algae which stick together in small regions, so if you avoid them, there is plenty of clean water. And there was no inorganic garbage on the beach. Also, there are 2 bars right on the beach, where you can go and buy a coffee of beer. The beach is so close that you can go in the night for a walk. Despite what I read, there is no hassle on the beach. There are 2 guys selling trips (camel safari and quad safari) but they only ask you once. There is also a nice looking swimming pool (with a small island in the middle) and lots of sunbeds, but I preferred the beach and the Mediterranean sea. The rooms are large, with balcony and the arhitecture is such that most have sea view. There is a free safe in the room, and a mini-fridge (empty, you can use it for your drinks). Unfortunately there is no wireless in the room (only some in the reception area, but it is not free). The bath is with a large bathtub (no shower cabin). A nice thing about the room, which I dind't find in any other hotel: there is an additional door between the bedroom and the small lobby where the bathroom door is. So if you close it there are 2 doors separating you from the hallway. This means, you are well insulated from the other tourists' noise. The bed and pilow were a somewhat hard. Bring your own pillow if you can. The breakfast is very good, there are omelettes and pancakes made on the spot, and a lot of choice at the buffet. You can choose to eat inside or outside. The dinner also has a lot of day-to-day variation. However, it is only between 19h and 21h and if you come after 20h some of the dishes are finished. This is probably because of the russians, who are big eaters :-). Officially there are no shorts and no sleeveless t-shirts permitted (short sleeves t-shirts ok) at dinner, however I did see some tourists in shorts so maybe they don't really enforce this stupid rule (we are on holiday at the seaside, what the heck ? this is not the Opera house !) The staff is friendly and polite, however if you have a technical problem you have to insist a lot in order to have it fixed. We had to phone the reception 4 times in the first day because our safe was locked upon arrival (stupid customer before us forgot to let it open!!!) until it was fixed. The remote control for the TV had no batteries, we asked 2 times for a change and then we simply abandoned the idea (we didn't need the TV anyway). Maybe they want to be tipped in advance for these things ? The hotel also has some souvenir shops (including a carpet shop) with fixed prices. The prices on the carpets are somewhat high, on the other stuff they are ok. The location is approx. 1km from the promenade which leads to the Medina (all in all, approx 1.5Km from the Medina). You can hire a cab (inexpensive) but we chose to walk since it is such a short distance. The town of Hammamet is animated, there are many places to eat and drink, enough supermarkets and shops, and of course the Medina is the place to go for souvenirs. There are plenty of cabs to take you around. Some of the shopkeepers (especially the young ones) are a bit aggressive and impolite but you get accustomed quickly and learn to say no. They will mumble something (probably not good) in Arabic but that's it. All in all we had a great holiday at the Sol Azur !

This holiday was undertaken by a 19 year old girl (me) and her parents: On a whole this has to be one of the best holidays i have ever had... We booked through Panorama (Thomas Cook) and did a 4 day safari.. the flight was good the only downside being the limited leg room and the 2 hour transfer from Monastir ( again the leg room was an issue).. When we arrived at the hotel it was just gone 1am and the staff were very friendly while we were filling in the hotel registration forms and we were shown to our rooms with ease The food at the Sol Azur is very good and as both breakfast and dinner are buffet you can have what you fancy with no set menus. The rooms are comfortable and large with a good maid service/ The 4 day safari is well worth doing as you see a lot of the country and there is a lot to see and do.. the guide and driver were very friendly and knew all there was to know and were able to answer all our questions Within the 4 day jeep safari we did a lot of different activities and visits: El Jem, Camel Ride, Tamerza horse and carriage ride around a plantation, visit 2 Mosques in Karouian and much more.. The food on the safari is excellent.. although for vegetarians it is limited to cous cous and omelette where the menu is set. When we came back from the 4 day safari we used both the beach and the pool area. the only downside to the beach is that towards the end of our stay there was increasing amounts of litter in the sea due to the changing currents.. the pool area is immaculatly looked after and the pool man is very happy to help by supplying the lounger cushions as soon as you arrive and he even started reserving our loungers for us. As a family we are not big on put-on entertainment however the Animation team (Chuchu, Kimo, Moez and Kiki/Riadh) can be very persuasive and there is a range of activities both during the day (boules, volleyball, arabic lesson, darts, water gym and table tennis) as well as the nightly entertainment (karaoke, miss azur, folklore and every night bingo). The animation team are very welcoming and make a real effort to know about you and spend time talking to you).. although the team mainly sticks to around the pool they do try to encourage people on the beach to take part. The barmen and other hotel staff are also very friendly. The actual town of Hammamet is nice, but the Medina is the key area to shop and haggle... When haggling start at about what half that they want you to pay - haggling is a way of life and the shop owners enjoy it - although instead of dropping down the price they tend to add in more items for a set price All in all this was truly was a holiday that we'll never forget as a family and we are already planning our next trip back (probably in the winter months to do more sightseeing in the north of the country). It really was a holiday that i'd repeat all over again

Good hotel, clean rooms, bedding and toilet/shower area. Beech great with cool gentle wind, pool clean and large, suitable for children and adults alike. Animation(pool entertainment) very amatureish, waste of time for the most part. Bel Azur somewhat better. Food. Dont expect Meat and 2 vegs. Food of great variety, plenty of choice. If you cant find something you like every night from a choice of 10/12 main courses then your the problem. Try everything, you never know you might like it. Alcohol. About half the cost of home. Beer at ?2.50/pt, Wine from ?9/bottle. Cheaper in some restaurants. Purchasing. Haggle in the market or fixed price shops for a good guide on price. Handbags; Channel, Guess, D & G, etc from ?15 Polo Shirts; from ?8 Armani shirts; from?11 Rooms; Cleaners normally turn electricity off when cleaning in the morning. So fridge thaws out. Remember to return to room after 1.00pm to turn on electricity again. Bring small ice tray with you great for a relaxing drink in the room in the evening. Buy your duty free on the way out, its by far the best value. No charge for safety deposit boxes or for sun loungers by the pool or at the beach. We found the staff very helpful, tipping was left to yourself. A small tip and a pleasant smile is appreciated and certainbly helps in the long term. We asked for a better room with a sea view(tip ?5) great investment for 2 weeks of evening relaxation. Remember that normal hotel wages are ?200/250 month. So even a tip of 2 Dinar is well appreciated and you will be looked after quickly and politely. Rember to you only get from your holiday what you also put into it. This is not a 4 star European Hotel, Good 3 Star, but remember that outside the hotel you are back in a 3rd World country. The hotel had many Russians, some Germans, Italians, Engish and few Irish. If you get up late(After 9) then expect to get the last of the sunbeds and not in the best locations by pool or sea, but plenty of them available. We found many of the Russians could do with a course on manners, learning what queues are for and generally loud.
