November 5,2009:
My partner and I were staying just for one night as we moved apartments. We were hoping for a nice, relaxing and luxurious night of pampering in what is supposed to be a good hotel in Bangkok, but we were sorely disappointed. Upon arriving at the hotel, there was no staff available to assist us with our luggage. We normally don't expect this, but for a 4/5 star hotel, this is usually standard. When we requested for assistance, it was provided as though it was an inconvenience to the staff. When checking in, it was clear that the staff was flustered and overworked. There was an ASEAN (high level) meeting happening at the hotel so there was lots of security all around. Clearly the staff were preoccupied with this, but at the expense to the other non-VIP guests. The receptionist was fine, but this was so far from what I expect from a 4-5 star hotel. Now the room: The room was very clean but extremely PLAIN and UNINTERESTING. Honestly, if you didn't know you were in Bangkok you would have no indication in the room that you were somewhere outside of the US or otherwise. Bed was extremely comfortable and the hotel room and bath were very spacious. Amenities in the bath were fine, but details like including a sewing kit or more than one bar of soap were overlooked. Very odd, indeed. We ordered room service and the service was excellent and food was excellent. Going up to the room during our short stay there was a very upset customer who was yelling that this hotel is no better than a 2 or 3 star hotel (in the lobby). Then we rode in the elevator with him. He said that he had been going to the Athenee for 3 years and that they have not sorted out problems (such as bad internet) during that entire time. He said it's been going downhill and he will not stay there again. .... Breakfast was very good and the food has never been disappointing. Sadly, the restaurant was overrun with government staff and secret service that it was not the most relaxing environment.... To sum it up, I was very disappointed with this short stay and cannot recommend this hotel when there are so many other amazing hotels in Bangkok that have much better service, better rooms, and less expensive price. If we ever have to do a short stay in a hotel, we would probably stay in the Conrad or one of the serviced apartments. This is NOT a 5 star hotel. Thankfully we paid only about $115USD through Agoda. -
October 22,2009:
plaza athenee bangkok, a royal meridien hotel is a lovely place to put up on a short stay in bangkok. excellent breakfast, nice views from the room - take a corner suite, lovely pool and surroundings, plenty of celebrity thai weddings and social events happening, and a few staff members that really know how to make any hotel stay extra special. and you know what i mean. in the restaurant, remembering your newspaper preference and offering it to you the next day at breakfast, or how about this - returning to the hotel one night, asking the doorman concierge about the bar, having it enthusiastically introduced, being shown the way there, offered seating options (indoors or on the neat little outdoor terrace) and placing a drink order... all with the doorman concierge! impressive. unexpected. it is this pleasant surprise factor that often one misses in other hotels. plaza athenee bangkok, a royal meridien hotel - recommended. -
October 21,2009:
All aspects of this hotel were perfect, from the buffet breakfast to the room service, to the extremely helpful concierge. Rooms were spacious and exceptionally clean. Location to sky train is a five minute walk and it is only two stations from the MBK and large shopping centres. (I would recommend you buy a day pass for 120 ba as you can travel all day for about 3 dollars au) pool, sauna, spa and squash court are all well appointed. Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing for a 5 star experience at an excellent rate. Be very wary of taxi drivers and always demand that they use their meter or else get out. Also be very wary of people who approach you in the street to befriend you, they usually pull out a notebook and start listing the places you should visit and giving you every local reason why you shouldn't go where you were heading. These crooks include the uniformed tourist police as they too are often corrupt...just keep your wits about you and don't be influenced by stories that venues are closed etc. Would recommend a trip to ride the elephants, crossing the river Kuay and visiting the Buddhist temple to see the tigers...even though they are drugged into no man's land...it is still an amazing experience. The royal palace and grand temple are very interesting. Remember that temples all require arms and legs to be covered for females. Enjoy the wonderful culture of Thailand -
October 17,2009:
Stayed at the plaza Athenee "by chance". Won a bid @ 57USD +taxes on Priceline.com No need to say that for that price the Plaza Athenee is an excellent hotel. It's a business hotel though, a bit boring (stayed at the Grand Millenium Sukhumvit a few days later which I thought was more fun). Rooms are nice but are very standard and a little bit dated. -
October 16,2009:
I have spent months staying at this Hotel, traveling for business. It is always a pleasure to stay at Plaza Athenee Bangkok Royal Meridien, and I would like to use the opportunity and bring a big thanks to the hotel?s management team. Constructive feedback it?s always good. Doing the traveling expenses I have noticed that I was charged twice for the Broadband (internet). I have send them an e-mail regarding this, but it seems that no one would bother or care about the extra money they've got in their pocket. I wonder...what if you were charged less ???? would they reply to your e-mail then? Other than that, it is a great hotel to stay at. So, in your way out check your final invoice before you leave.
