November 9,2008:
Have just returned from a weeks stay. On arrival we found the reception staff rude and not very helpful. We had a junior suite but felt that the extra room was just part of the hallway. Main bedroom was a good size and clean, as was the bathroom. The air conditioning was very noisy but as it wasn't that hot we managed with the windows open. There was some traffic noise (floor 9) but we got used to it. Breakfast was good apart from the coffee. We found the area quite safe to walk around in, more old style residential with some good places to eat. Da Brambini (Italian) and Marius (themed restaurant) on the front also Shirley (local seafood) and Galeria 1618 (restaurant come bookshop) one street back. Try to visit Lapa on a weekend evening for a unique Carioca experience. -
February 29,2008:
I just stayed there the past week for a conference in RIO. The rooms are decent, equivalent of holiday inn in the US. the rooms were clean, but I saw a few big cockroaches roaming the halls (I even caught one on video). the rooms lack balconies, which I would be annoyed by if I had a beach view, but I didn't so it wasn't that big a deal. The staff was another matter. I had a translator assigned to me for my conference and I needed her to go over my presentation for my talk. When I asked her to come up, the staff immediately stopped me and said that in order for her to come up, I have to pay 100 Reais and 5% of what I was paying her. I was very confused until I realized they were implying that she was a prostitute. It was very insulting. oh the breakfast was very good. -
September 18,2007:
The rooms are big. Rooms with two beds have full size beds. Rooms with one bed (at least the one that we got) have two twin beds put together -- which is not very comfortable. The location is ok, but not great. It's pretty much at the end of the beach making it hard to get to other beaches such as Ipanema. I recommend Orla hotel instead which has similar price but much better location. There were pigeons in the air conditioning. We heard cooing all night, and they caused my husband terrible allergies. When we told the front desk they said they will take care of it but they did not do anything. When we complained the second time they were not surprised and cleaned the air conditioning and got rid of pigeons. Besides this problem, and the smell of cigarettes, the hotel is clean. They have buffet breakfast included which is better than the standard continental breakfast in US. P.S. There is no pool at the hotel. -
January 5,2007:
Just returned from 2 weeks at Othon Leme. Overall, a very positive experience. Great views, helpful staff, very clean, decent room service, reasonable prices. The usual warnings apply: book your own excursions, drivers, etc. to avoid substantial kickback premiums. Staff English is somewhat limited in most cases, you frequently have to go thru the front desk to get room service orders translated. Occasional infrastructure disruptions: elevators, clogged toilets. Biggest problem is ongoing construction which resulted in a lot of noise beginning as early as 7:00 AM running thru 6:00 PM. This is probably a transient condition, so you might want to check (if you can) before you book. Location is at extreme northeastern end of Copa crescent, good (less street noise) and bad (longer walk to restaurants, more popular beaches). Great free breakfast buffet includes bacon and eggs. Ocean view rooms add about $30. per night. -
December 3,2006:
