November 9,2009:
This is a resort where you can achieve a high degree of relaxation; it's all there - three lovely sandy bays, warm aquamarine-coloured sea, and very friendly service from the Antiguan staff - they smile and are very pleased to help every guest. Our room, a bungalow with a little terrace by the beach was spacious (two double beds) and had air-conditioning (advisable in the hot climate but some of the rooms only have overhead fans), It needed a re-decoration and some renovation, but this didn't spoil anything for us. The food was more than adequate, with plenty of fresh fish and salads and any kind of drink is on tap - we were on an inclusive deal. We didn't see a great deal of the island - just a trip to the capital, St John's, and this is worth a look (a good museum and an interesting cathedral). We also did the trip to see and hold the sting rays. On the whole, the official excursions are over-priced. A good relaxing holiday in the sun. -
November 2,2009:
We'd obviously seen that the location appears to be idyllic and that in general the comments about service and food were positive, but in the back of my mind I couldn't help but think about the relatively small amount of money they must receive from the holidayoperator and how that might effect our holiday. Well I'm very happy to say that we had no need to be concerned and can honestly say that Hawksbill surpassed our expectation. I've 25 years experience working in 4-5 star hotels so feel that I can make some balanced comments. Sure the hotel owners could spend loads of money updating some of the structure and refurbishing the bedrooms to an modern "trendy" standard, the only problem would be that they'd expect a return on the investment and therefore charge a higher rate which would almost certainly mean that the vast majority of it's customers, including us, would be priced out of the property. However what the hotel management can do, and do very well is keep the place clean and tidy and ensure that the staff provide a great service. If the entrance is not the most glamours the welcome at reception is very warm and sincere. Once you walk past the reception and look out over the hotel gardens and beaches you soon begin relax and get into holiday mode. From reception we and our bags were whisked off on a golf buggy to our room, which we found to be clean and with a huge king size bed. Obviously we only got to see the one room and I'm sure like every hotel in the world they have their better rooms and their not so good rooms, but ours was fine and a great location just meters away from the waters edge. Meals appear to be an alternating 4 course choice menu (2 main course options) on one day and then a self service buffet style the following night. Although the food is not in my option the highlight of the hotel it is certainly more than adequate. It is all produced (with the notable exception of the majority of the desserts) in house using fresh produce. Breakfast is a high point with a selection of cereals and fresh fruit with a chef on hand to make omelets, eggs as you like, pancakes and French Toast and at no additional cost! You don't get that in many 4 four star UK hotels. You try asking for a smoked salmon omelet in the UK, you'll get it, but in most cases at a cost. Lunch is a little repetitive, but there is a selection of fresh salads along side a couple of daily "specials" and the standard burger options. To be honest in the heat we couldn't have managed anything more than salad and some grilled fish, so were quite happy. One negative is that occasionally the service at all meal times was a little slow but it's not as if you've go any where to go! Concerning the birds, unless you have a real phobia then it's not a problem, these are very small birds that have a liking for cake and packets of sugar. We found them to be an amusing part of the holiday and part of open air dinning. They are far nicer than the wasps back in the UK that often course havoc around outdoor dining. The drinks service is great and the wine at dinner was pretty good and certainly they don't hold back on the service happily topping up the glasses throughout the evening. I could keep going on and on, but in a nut shell this hotel is excellent value for money on a great piece of coast and plenty of space so you never need to feel cramped. -
October 30,2009:
We have just returned from The Hawksbill, and we feel completely refreshed and relaxed about life...it must have been a good holiday then? Yes indeed! The staff are very attentive and make every effort to accomodate one's requirements. Our room, a Superior Garden Bungelow was kept spotlessly clean. I would definately recommend the air conditioning as a must. Keep the doors shut to avoid intrusion by mosquitoes. The local tree frogs are amazingly noisy ( all through the night!, ) Most people I spoke to found all the strange animal noises a bit of a shock on their first night, but after that you get used to it and the fact is that you will still sleep very well. The beaches and the views are superb with plenty of shady places to retire to with a good book. The days will pass in a lovely balmy, sedate way without any noise intrusion. A dip in the warm Caribbean sea is only a few steps away when you overheat, and the pool is also nice and warm. The food is very good and caters very well for standard tastes. Kids love the breakfasts ( the Staff are very good with children ) particularly, and really I have to say that most of the clients , English in the main , did nothing but stuff themselves each and every meal. Some plates were piled high as we greedy Brits tucked in. The amenities were fine without being luxurious. The day trips offered by local companies offering sailing and snorkelling etc are a little bit on the pricey side; We limited ourselves to one day excursion ( for three of us that came to about £200.00 ) By the end of our week we had great tans, full bellies and plenty of happy scenes to remember this resort by. -
October 23,2009:
The Hawksbill is in a beautiful location, with four beaches to choose from and lovely garden grounds. It is definitely worth paying extra for air -conditioning. We were allocated a room on the headland overlooking Honeymoon Cove and it was a much better standard than the garden rooms, although still fairly simple. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We thought the food was generally good, not Michelin star standard but good value for what we paid for this holiday. The snorkelling was disappointing but it depends what you are comparing it with - we've been spoiled by wonderful holidays in the Maldives. Evening entertainment is very low key. We found the other guests very friendly although you don't have to socialise with other people if you don't want to. The hotel buildings are definitely tired but this is part of the charm. We were told the lease runs out next year so the staff are waiting to find out if the hotel is going to stay open. It could certainly benefit from refurbishment but this would also increase the cost of staying there. I don't know how anyone can complain about this resort. It is not four star standard but we didn't pay four star prices and thought it was good value. Antigua has been badly hit by the worldwide recession and the downturn in tourism and the resort was only one third full. September is the off season and we were pleasantly surprised by the weather. We had been worried about hurricanes but the weather was lovely. There are plenty of excursions so you can fit in some sightseeing - we hired a 4 wheel drive for a couple of days but if you haven't visited Antigua before, it's probably better to book a personal tour in a 4 wheel drive with a driver - you can see the main sites in one day. We had a wonderful lunch at the Calabash beach restaurant on English Harbour. Take the road up to Shirley Heights and look out for the sign on the right leading you down to the beach. The owner did say he was thinking of closing for the next 6 weeks as business was so quiet. -
October 20,2009:
This was my first time to the Caribbean and also to an all inclusive so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was an easy trip from the airport by taxi and the views on arrival were breathtaking. We were upgraded to a beautiful bungalow on Palm Beach - one of four beaches and I think we definitely had the best rooms. The rooms are basic and typically Caribbean (apparently) but the shower was hot, the towels were clean and the beds were comfy. The food was simple but lovely - massive choice of breakfast, simple grilled lunches with salad and a mixture of buffets, a la carte and beach barbecues in the evening. Not to mention the afternoon teas... Drinks were always served with a smile and were freely available. The only downside was the bar closed about 10.30pm in the evening - having said that I had usually packed so much into my day that I was ready for bed. By the way, the bacon IS very crispy, there ARE birds in the open air restaurants, and there isn't air conditioning in every room. But the description of the hotel in the Virgin brochure is accurate and fair. There were only three downsides - not enough motor watersports (but then that would have ruined the quiet ambience), the sunbeds don't go flat (minor inconvenience) and the end of Palm Beach could get quite noisy at the weekeend with locals (but security soon sorted this out and they weren't late). I would recommend this hotel with no hesitation.
